We're kicking off a new student ministry this Friday, September 4th, called Students of War (SOW). We will meet at 401 Coneflower Ln. in Stafford from 6:30-8:00 PM.

Este viernes 4 de septiembre inauguramos un nuevo ministerio para estudiantes llamado Students of War (SOW). Nos reuniremos en la 401 Coneflower Ln. en Stafford de 6:30-8:00 PM.

Before students meet for the first time, we wanted to explain not just what SOW is, but a small commitment we're making to you as parents — because we don't want this to be a program that happens to your student without you. We want to partner with you in it.

Antes de que los estudiantes se reúnan por primera vez, queríamos explicarles no solo en qué consiste SOW, sino también compartir un pequeño compromiso que asumimos con ustedes como padres, pues no queremos que este sea un programa que simplemente involucre a sus hijos sin contar con ustedes. Queremos colaborar con ustedes en esta iniciativa.

Starting this week, you'll get a short email/blog post like this one before each gathering (we meet every other Friday). It will always include two things:

A partir de esta semana, recibirás un breve correo electrónico/artículo como este antes de cada reunión (nos reunimos cada dos viernes). Siempre incluirá dos cosas:

1. A two- or three-sentence heads-up on what your student will be learning that week.

2. One simple, low-pressure question you can ask them afterward — something that opens a real conversation without feeling like a pop quiz.

1. Un breve resumen de dos o tres frases sobre lo que tu hijo(a) aprenderá esa semana.

2. Una pregunta sencilla y sin presión que puedas hacerle después; algo que inicie una conversación real sin que parezca un examen sorpresa.

That's it. No homework, no curriculum to read ahead of time — just enough so that when your student comes home, you can ask a good question instead of the usual "how was it?" (which, let's be honest, tends to get a one-word answer).

Eso es todo. Sin tareas, sin programa de estudios que leer con anticipación; solo lo suficiente para que cuando tu hijo llegue a casa, puedas hacerle una buena pregunta en lugar del típico "¿qué tal te fue?" (que, seamos honestos, suele obtener una respuesta de una sola palabra).

THIS WEEK — Session 0: "Welcome to the Battlefield"

This first gathering isn't a Bible lesson yet — it's us setting the tone for the whole year. We're explaining the group's name and its double meaning: Students of War, because school, friendships, and everyday life are real battlegrounds where students need to learn to stand firm in Christ — and SoW, because students are also sowers, planting seeds of faith in their generation even when they can't yet see the harvest. Our anchor verse for the entire year is Galatians 6:7-9: "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." We'll also be really clear with students about what this group is (a place for honest questions, real discipleship, and the gospel every single week) and what it isn't (entertainment, a performance, or a place you have to have it all together to belong).

Esta primera reunión aún no es una lección bíblica; es el momento en que establecemos el tono para todo el año. Explicaremos el nombre del grupo y su doble significado: Students of War (Estudiantes de Guerra), porque la escuela, las amistades y la vida cotidiana son verdaderos campos de batalla donde los estudiantes deben aprender a mantenerse firmes en Cristo; y SOW (que suena igual que la palabra inglesa para «sembradores»), porque los estudiantes también son sembradores que plantan semillas de fe en su generación, incluso cuando aún no pueden ver la cosecha. Nuestro versículo clave para todo el año es Gálatas 6:7-9: «No nos cansemos de hacer el bien, porque a su debido tiempo cosecharemos si no nos damos por vencidos». También dejaremos muy claro a los estudiantes qué es este grupo (un espacio para preguntas sinceras, discipulado auténtico y el evangelio cada semana) y qué no es (entretenimiento, un espectáculo o un lugar donde debas tener tu vida perfectamente resuelta para poder pertenecer).

A QUESTION TO ASK AFTER FRIDAY

UNA PREGUNTA PARA HACER DESPUÉS DE EST VIERNES

"What's one 'battlefield' in your life right now — a place where you feel pressure to compromise or go silent about what you believe?"

¿Cuál es un «campo de batalla» en tu vida en este momento: un lugar donde sientes presión para ceder o guardar silencio sobre lo que crees?

This is actually the same question we're asking students that night, so you're not springing anything new on them — you're continuing a conversation they've already started. If they're not sure how to answer, you can offer a few examples to get them talking: school (pressure to cheat, gossip, or go along with something they know is wrong), social media (comparison or feeling like they have to hide what they actually believe), or home and friendships. You don't need to fix or solve anything in this conversation — just listen, and let them know you're glad they're part of a group built to help them face it.

En realidad, esta es la misma pregunta que les planteamos a los estudiantes esta noche, así que no los estás tomando por sorpresa con algo nuevo; simplemente estás dando continuidad a una conversación que ellos ya han iniciado. Si no saben bien qué responder, puedes ofrecerles algunos ejemplos para animarlos a hablar: la escuela (la presión por hacer trampa, los chismes o seguir la corriente en situaciones que saben que están mal), las redes sociales (las comparaciones o la sensación de tener que ocultar sus verdaderas creencias) o el ámbito familiar y las amistades. No es necesario que intentes arreglar o resolver nada durante esta charla; limítate a escuchar y hazles saber que te alegra que formen parte de un grupo creado precisamente para ayudarles a afrontar estas situaciones.

It also helps to share your current battlefield and gives the family something to pray for. 

También ayuda el compartir su batalla actual y le da a la familia algo por lo que orar.

We're really glad your student is joining us for this. More than anything, our prayer is that SOW becomes a place where they're equipped — not just to sit through a lesson, but to actually live out their faith at school, at home, and everywhere in between. 

Nos alegra mucho que su hijo(a) se una a nosotros en esta experiencia. Ante todo, nuestra oración es que SOW se convierta en un lugar donde reciban la preparación necesaria, no solo para escuchar una lección, sino para vivir realmente su fe en la escuela, en casa y en cualquier otro lugar.
