Teach us to Number Our Days | Enséñanos a Contar Nuestros Días

Last Wednesday night, after prayer meeting, I came home to a phone call from David, a brother in Christ, whom the church prayed for that night. As he was driving to New York City, he asked me to pray over his dying aunt who was in the hospital. Through the phone speaker, I read Psalm 23 and prayed for her as her room was filled with loved ones gathered around her bedside. It was a difficult and heartbreaking moment.

El miércoles pasado por la noche, después de la reunión de oración, llegué a casa y recibí una llamada de David, un hermano en Cristo por quien la iglesia había orado esa misma noche. Mientras conducía hacia la ciudad de Nueva York, me pidió que orara por su tía, que se encontraba en el hospital y estaba agonizando. A través del altavoz del teléfono, leí el Salmo 23 y oré por ella, mientras su habitación estaba llena de seres queridos reunidos junto a su lecho. Fue un momento difícil y desgarrador.

Then yesterday, we all had to say "see you later" to our sister Ana, a pillar of our church, from whom all could sense her love for the Lord and the faith she carried. I intentionally say, "see you later," because as believers, we know what comes next. Our hope is secure. We stand firm in the promise of eternity through Jesus Christ. Luego, ayer, todos tuvimos que decirle "hasta luego" a nuestra hermana Ana, un pilar de nuestra iglesia, en quien todos podíamos percibir su amor por el Señor y la fe que ella profesaba. Digo "hasta luego" deliberadamente porque, como creyentes, sabemos lo que sigue. Nuestra esperanza es firme. Nos mantenemos firmes en la promesa de la eternidad a través de Jesucristo.

These moments raise an important question: Do you and those around you know? Do our families, friends, neighbors, and even everyone in our congregations understand the hope that awaits those who belong to Christ? Estos momentos plantean una pregunta importante: ¿saben eso ustedes y quienes los rodean? ¿Comprenden nuestras familias, amigos, vecinos e incluso todos los miembros de nuestra congregación la esperanza que aguarda a quienes pertenecen a Cristo?

I find myself understanding Solomon's words more deeply now: Ahora comprendo más profundamente las palabras de Salomón:

"It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting..." (Ecclesiastes 7:2) "Mejor es ir a una casa de luto, que ir a una casa de banquete..." (Eclesiastés 7:2)

Why? Because mourning forces us to confront reality. It causes us to reflect on the fragility of life and the brevity of our days. It strips away distractions and brings us face-to-face with the question we all must answer: Do I know where I will spend eternity?

¿Por qué? Porque el duelo nos obliga a afrontar la realidad. Nos lleva a reflexionar sobre la fragilidad de la vida y la brevedad de nuestros días. Despoja las distracciones y nos pone frente a frente con la pregunta que todos debemos responder: ¿Sé dónde pasaré la eternidad?

My devotional reading today made me reflect on it too:

"All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades... but the word of our God will stand forever." (Isaiah 40:6-8) "[T]oda carne es como la hierba, y todo su esplendor es como la flor del campo. Se seca la hierba, se marchita la flor... Pero la palabra de nuestro Dios permanece para siempre." (Isaías 40:6-8)

Life is fleeting. We are here today and gone tomorrow. Yet God's Word stands forever, and so does the promise of eternal life for those who trust in Christ. May houses of mourning not only remind us of our mortality but also renew our urgency to proclaim the Gospel faithfully, so that when someone else's final day comes, and when ours comes as well, there will be no uncertainty about what is next.

La vida es pasajera. Hoy estamos aquí y mañana nos hemos ido. Sin embargo, la Palabra de Dios permanece para siempre, al igual que la promesa de vida eterna para quienes confían en Cristo. Que las casas de duelo no solo nos recuerden nuestra mortalidad, sino que también renueven nuestra urgencia de proclamar fielmente el Evangelio, para que, cuando llegue el último día de otra persona —y cuando llegue el nuestro también—, no haya incertidumbre sobre lo que sigue.

Lord, help us number our days and live with eternity in view. Strengthen us to proclaim the hope of Christ with urgency and compassion, so that many may come to know the certainty of salvation before their time on earth is done. Amen.

Señor, ayúdanos a contar nuestros días y a vivir con la eternidad en mente. Fortalécenos para proclamar la esperanza de Cristo con urgencia y compasión, para que muchos lleguen a conocer la certeza de la salvación antes de que termine su tiempo en la tierra. Amén.
