The Treasure in the Field | El Tesoro en el Campo

The Ache | El Anhelo

Ask a room full of people what it means to be blessed, and most will point to the same few things: a good job, a healthy body, money in the bank, a respected position, a peaceful home, people who accept us. We say “I’m blessed” when the test results come back clear, when the promotion arrives, when the relationship is finally at peace.

But what happens when the test results don’t come back clear? When you lose the job, the relationship breaks, or the acceptance never comes? If those things are the blessing, then does losing them mean God has left us? Many people live their whole lives chasing a blessing they have never truly understood.

What We Call Blessing | Lo Que Llamamos Bendición

The good things of this life are not evil. Scripture says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17, ESV). But a gift is not the Giver. When we make the gifts the goal, we confuse the gifts with the treasure. Jesus warned us:

“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” (Luke 12:15, ESV)

(Lucas 12:15, NBLA)

Health fades. Wealth can be lost in a day. Positions are handed to someone else. Even the best relationships cannot hold the full weight of our souls. If our blessing can be taken from us, it was never the true blessing.

The Treasure in the Field | El Tesoro en el Campo

Jesus told two short stories that turn our idea of blessing upside down:

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” (Matthew 13:44–46, ESV)

(Mateo 13:44–46, NBLA)

Notice two words: “in his joy.” The man is not grieving what he gives up. He is not paying a price to earn the treasure. He has simply seen something so valuable that everything else looks small next to it. The treasure of the kingdom is the King Himself. Paul saw it too: “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8, ESV).

The Blessing Is a Person | La Bendición Es una Persona

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 1:3, ESV)

(Efesios 1:3, NBLA)

Every blessing is found “in Christ.” The true blessing is not something Jesus gives us apart from Himself. It is Jesus Himself, and in Him we receive everything else.

In Him we have eternal life: “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3, ESV).

In Him we have peace in the middle of trials, not after them: “In me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, ESV). It is a peace “which surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7, ESV).

In Him we have strength to persevere: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9, ESV).

In Him we have joy even when we suffer for His name. Jesus Himself calls this blessed: “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven” (Matthew 5:11–12, ESV).

In Him we have a love we can never doubt. Every time we remember His scarred hands and feet, we remember that “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, ESV).

In Him we have hope: “I go to prepare a place for you... I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also” (John 14:2–3, ESV).

None of these come from this earth. The world cannot give them, and the world cannot take them away. That is why the psalmist could say, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:25–26, ESV).

The Gospel in the Story | El Evangelio en la Historia

Here is the good news: we do not buy this treasure. Christ bought us. He left the riches of heaven, became poor, and gave everything, even His own life on the cross, so that we could have Him forever. “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32, ESV).

(Romanos 8:32, NBLA).

We receive the true blessing not by earning it, but by finally opening our hands and accepting Him: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9, ESV). When we see His worth, letting go of everything else is not a sacrifice. It is joy.

Reflect | Para Reflexionar

When I say “I am blessed,” what am I usually pointing to?

Cuando digo “soy bendecido,” ¿a qué estoy señalando normalmente?

Is there a gift I am holding so tightly that it has become my treasure instead of Christ?

If everything earthly were taken from me today, would I still consider myself blessed?

Father, forgive me for the times I have called Your gifts my treasure and forgotten the Giver. Open my eyes to see the surpassing worth of Jesus. Thank You for the eternal life I have in Him, for peace in my trials, for strength to keep going, for joy even when I suffer for His name, for the love I see in His scarred hands and feet, and for the hope of the place He is preparing for me.

Loosen my grip on what this world offers, and give me the joy of the man who found the treasure in the field. If You give, I will thank You. If You take away, I will still have You. For anyone reading this who does not yet know You, draw them to Christ today, that they may receive Him and find in Him every blessing.

Si Tú quitas, todavía te tendré a Ti.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

En el Nombre de Jesús. Amén.
