40 Days of Prayer and Fasting Journal, Day 2 | 40 Días de Oración y Ayuno, Día 2
What are we looking for? Why are we praying and fasting? Are we looking for the approval and blessings of man? Certainly not! With the Apostle Paul, we say, “If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). ¡Ciertamente no!
What comes from man is temporary. What comes from GOD, endures. But more than the gift, we seek the Giver. His plan is perfect. In Him we are secure.
We seek a heavenly legacy. To make this choice is to reject a worldly one. They are opposite one another (as Jesus has been teaching us in our study of Matthew). Even in spiritual matters, like prayer, fasting and tithing, to seek the recognition of men, is to forfeit the more precious heavenly reward.
I was reminded of this as I read Jeremiah, and re-read the story of Uriah son of Shemaiah. As Jeremiah was being threatened with death for speaking the words of GOD, Uriah had the audacity to abandon the mob, and turned to prophesy in agreement with Jeremiah. “He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like those of Jeremiah” (Jeremiah 26:20).
His reward? The king send out his men to kill him. Uriah was afraid and fled to Egypt, but when the king heard about it, he pursued him even there. “The king then killed Uriah with a sword and had him buried in an unmarked grave” (Jeremiah 26:23 (NLT)).
This was the world’s reward for Uriah’s faithfulness in speaking the Words of GOD. They wanted to erase him from history. They wanted him forgotten.
And yet, I found myself amazed that here I am reading about Uriah 2,600 years later. His memory lives. His godly legacy continues. I know nothing of the thousands buried in marked graves—perhaps the most elaborate graves in honor of their earthly accomplishments. But Uriah has an enduring legacy that will live through eternity. His faithfulness to GOD will never be forgotten.
Let that be our legacy too. Remember Uriah as you commit your time and effort to prayer and fasting this week. You are seeking something far more precious than gold. So, do not make judgments about your efforts with human eyes. Trust the GOD of Uriah, and Jeremiah. It is Him Whom we seek.
May faithfulness to GOD guide all our efforts too.
